Q: Hi, I got called out by a friend who had water coming up in her shower when she flushed the toilet (which is next to the shower). Having disconnected the toilet, i put my snake camera down the soil pipe and it looks like the firm who refitted her cloak room have used this item under ground, with the shower waste entering through the boss. Obviously there is nothing stopping the water backing up as the toilet is flushed - and coming up in the shower - less than 500mm away.
I'm a carpenter but know a bit about plumbing; this fitting shouldn't be used in this manner should it, thought below ground was orange pipe, and shouldn't the shower waste pipe be bossed into the 110mm from the top - thus preventing this backflow of sewage into her shower
thanks for any help

A: Hi Richie,
Thank you for your query.
There are a few reasons as to why this is happening.
You can check out the following things -
1. Make sure that there is a shower trap under the shower tray. This will stop any backflow.
2. Check the make sure that there is significant falls in the pipework that will stop any backflow.
3. Check to see if the toilet is going straight into a bend from the Multiwick. This again may cause the water backing up as it cant get away fast enough.
I hope this advice is of some help for you.
If there is anything else please do not hesiate to contact me.
Kind Regards,
Timmy
