Guy Hayward.

Currently Commercial Director and Co founder of The Groovy Food Company specialising in healthy organic foods presented in a fun & quirky way.

Up until 2002 his previous life was that of a professional boat bum. Enjoyed sailing as a youth. Joined the Merchant Navy at 18 years old and trained to be a deck officer with Mobil Oil. Never one to keep an eye on world economics or read the papers too closely he didn’t realise that he was destined to lose his job once qualified at the tender age of 23. Mass redundancies resulted in Guy taking a gap year and travelling to the USA on his meagre cadet redundancy pay. He missed a greyhound bus to Chicago from Baltimore (the first leg of his tour around the USA) and ended up chatting to a yacht captain in Baltimore harbour. Plans for travelling to Chicago changed impulsively to crewing a 60ft yacht to the Caribbean….tough choice!!. This was the start of becoming a fully fledged boat bum, connoisseur of fine rum and the good life in general!!

One job lead to another and qualifications & experience lead to eventually becoming the captain of a 52 metre three masted schooner aged 28……..things became slightly more professional!! Several other Captain positions on large 40-50metre yachts followed until 2003.

The arrival of 2 children on the scene meant that Guy’s days as a full time professional yacht captain were numbered and it was time to find a new life ashore. In 2003 over a bottle or two of red wine, The Groovy Food Company was born from Rosie’s, (Guy’s wife), passion for nutritional healthy foods and Guy’s desire to be there to see his young family grow up.

When Guy was invited to join the team and to put his previous life skills back into practise as their navigator in the Round Britain Boat Race it was just too tempting. It wasn’t so much finding a reason why but rather why the hell not!!! Maybe genuine ignorance of the true rigours and challenge of the race is why he has not backed out or maybe it is because he and the other team members are completely nuts and going through a mid life crisis!!

Guy’s relevant experience includes over 20 years at sea worldwide on both commercial ships and large yachts both sail and power. His qualifications include: MCA Class III certificate endorsed to command yachts up to 3000GRT, RYA Offshore Yachtmaster, RYA Yachtmaster Instructor, GMDSS Cert. Also has experience as an instructor in various watersports including windsurfing, dinghy sailing and kayaking.

We couldn’t be bothered to add a bio for Dave as there is nothing interesting to say, and he kept the helmet on for obvious reasons

Steve Hogg
Steve Hogg.

Steve Hogg has worked in the Direct Marketing world for the last 20 years across several different industries from Publishing to Plumbing and Heating and has known and worked with Justin for the last 5 years. Living in Northamptonshire with his wife and two children he could not get any further away from the sea in the UK, so when the opportunity came along to be involved in this event he jumped at the chance, unfortunately due to his rather large frame this then caused a tidal wave which was believed to have reached as far as West Cork!

Being part of the Shore Crew and assisting with both the Boat side and managing the Pulsar direct road shows is going to prove a tough challenge but he is sure with the odd G&T along the way it will be a worthwhile one.

Steve Hogg
Pat Dorgan. Head Groupie.

Pat Dorgan is currently Group Sales Director of Pulsar Direct Ltd. After 18 years in the F.M.C.G sector he took the plunge and joined Pulsar Direct in 2001 as Sales Manager.

Based in Cork Pat divides his time between Ireland and the U.K. leading a sales team that is recognised as being at the forefront of innovative sales and marketing in the Heating and Plumbing industry.

Pat is married to Fran and they have three kids Mark 12, Aoife 11 and Eoin 8. All the kids are heavily involved in sport and all of Pats spare time is spent either coaching under age Rugby and Soccer or acting as a taxi service for early morning swimming lessons and Galas.

When he has time he likes to go and play golf but this is becoming the exception rather than the rule. (He thinks work is getting in the way of his Golf)

In order for Justin and his team to be able to complete their Power Boat trip they need a back up team to organise everything on land and Pat has gladly offered his services to take on the role of “Head Groupie”

Pats logic is that it is far easier to drive 2,500 miles in ten days rather than go around in the UK in a Power Boat. Thank God for Sat Nav & Beer.
